As we shall see, we evolved to love first and strive second.

“As we shall see, we evolved to love first and strive second. That’s because (as I’ll go into in more detail in Chapter 2) as we evolved, human babies’ brains got so big that they couldn’t complete their growth in utero. Unlike most other mammals, we humans had to birth babies with huge heads and still survive. Human babies’ skulls remained flexible in order not to kill their mothers, but that wasn’t enough. So—big fact here, please take note—just about everything that most of us feel about connection, bonding, spirituality, fairness, empathy, art, and love comes down to this: human females started to give birth to premature babies. If our babies had developed in the womb to the same point as, say, newborn monkeys, they would need to gestate for two and a half years. With their heads fully grown to accommodate our big human brains, they’d kill all their mothers at birth, rather than just kill many of them. So human babies evolved to be born when their brains are less than 30 percent the size of an adult human brain. We continue our outsized brains’ development outside the womb, with our brain doubling in size in our first year. Thus, we needed intensive parental care for years and years to grow our brains. This is (as we shall see) why we love.”
