I believe that evolution is on the side of love.
“As you will read in the chapters to follow, I believe that evolution is on the side of love. So I am hopeful love can win. I’m hopeful because of my own lifetime experiences prove that even damaged goods like me can be at least partially healed and changed. I’m hopeful love can win because a series of national racial crises exposed our failings, and people who had previously stood on the sidelines stepped up to fight for fairness. I’m hopeful love can win because the desire for change in 2020 and in 2021 had a power that was made manifest as crowds flooded through American cities and small towns to protest the murder of George Floyd. I’m hopeful love can win because after the storming of the Capitol by a mob of White supremacists, Christian nationalists, militia members, and Trump cult fanatic evangelicals, even a few Republican leaders stepped up at great personal risk to condemn the riot. I’m hopeful love can win because public policy experts and economists have pointed out in the last several years the folly of excluding domestic work from economic metrics such as the GDP, given the data showing that unpaid women’s work constitutes a huge slice of economic activity in every country. I’m hopeful love can win because Black marchers have noticed a change: many more White Americans are showing up for the cause of racial justice. Similarly, many men have woken up to the discrimination and harassment women face and have become feminists, demanding justice for all. And (as we shall see) many men are also figuring out that they have benefited from feminism. I’m hopeful love can win because American life has been dramatically upended by Covid, and when things are turned upside down, sometimes people change. I’m hopeful love can win because in its first one hundred days the Biden Administration initiated sweeping legislation designed to help families and children (on a scale never seen before in American history) and made family life a priority. I’m hopeful love can win because people like Nicole Lynn Lewis have stepped forward to lead. In Pregnant Girl Lewis notes that ‘Our results will disprove the pervasive myth that teen parents aren’t capable of becoming college graduates. While half of parenting students across the country leave school without a degree, 90 percent of Generation Hope Scholars stay in college from year to year and 70 percent maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher each semester, with some earning perfect 4.0s.’”
