“According to “What the Pandemic Reveals About the Male Ego,” by columnist Nicholas Kristof (New York Times, June 13, death rates from the coronavirus for twenty-one countries around the world, thirteen led by men and eight by women, showed the male-led countries suffered far worse in the first wave. He quotes former national security adviser under President Barack Obama, Susan Rice: “I don’t think it’s a coincidence that some of the best-run places have been run by women: New Zealand, Germany, Taiwan. And where we’ve seen things go most badly wrong—the U.S., Brazil, Russia, the UK—it’s a lot of male ego and bluster.” It’s not that the leaders who best managed the virus were all women. But those who bungled the response worst were all men, and mostly a particular type: authoritarian, vainglorious, and blustering. The words child minding and caring, let alone empathy and parenting and especially love do not came to mind when considering the male “leadership qualities” of thugs like India’s Narendra Modi, Vladimir Putin in Russia, Donald Trump in the US, Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil, and Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Iran.”
