What is Child-Appropriate?
“I think the words child-appropriate are often used incorrectly. What’s ‘appropriate’ to me is to pass on to a child or grandchild (or to students as Francis does) lessons in being a hands-on, polite, kind, and a capable doer. That way you aren’t afraid to follow your interests. Maybe you even turn out to be someone who can: build; start a fire; cook; build a wall; do CPR; swim, climb, and draw; skin a rabbit; look people in the eye; work hard and not whine (too much); and shake hands, make eye contact, and introduce yourself. Maybe you can even identify an artist or composer or two by seeing or hearing a bit of their work; know the difference between World Wars I and II; appreciate that China is an old and incredible civilization; and appreciate that all good roads lead to Black American music. Some computer coding and robot creation doesn’t hurt either.”
A pre-order purchase of the paperback right now really will help the book far more than buying it later. And if you decide to give away copies of my book as gifts to family and friends or to those you work with - say to everyone you know :) - please pre-order those extra copies today. This is when you can really help out most. In today's nutty book world pre-orders are "where it's at."
