Why isn't the Government Doing Anything?
“Evolution built us to expect help from others and to give it. That’s the reason we instinctively wanted to know why our government “isn’t doing anything” and expected someone to ‘do something’ when Covid-19 emerged as our version of the Black Death. That’s because, as Sarah Hrdy points out in Mothers and Others: The Evolutionary Origins of Mutual Understanding, while childcare methods vary from culture to culture, there is one universally true childcare baseline: we humans are ‘cooperative breeders.’ We cooperative breeders evolved to expect help. Infant care is always social and the basis of every society—or it was until we backward, career-addled “moderns” came along. In our individualistic environment the new ‘normal’ before Biden was elected was for the government to say, ‘You’re on your own.’ Call this the logical “free enterprise” outcome of the glorification of Ayn Rand’s individualism.”
