Year One • Erin Bagwell and Frank Schaeffer Live In Conversation
Gender Fair, The Balance Dilemma, and HeyMama present a celebration of Motherhood (in time for Mother’s Day) and discuss the challenges of keeping it all together - the expectation to transform into superwoman juggling family, work, and life. Please join documentary filmmaker Erin Bagwell and author Frank Schaeffer to discuss his book about raising the next generation in a society that devalues childcare, relying on ‘unpaid labor’ and ignoring the needs of the family.

During the event, new mom and Brooklyn filmmaker Erin Bagwell will showcase her award-winning documentary about surviving the first year of motherhood, Year One. Each scene of this 30-minute documentary unfolds like an intimate diary entry as we hear Erin’s inner thoughts, witness her struggles, and celebrate the a-ha moments as she documents her motherhood journey from pregnancy to her daughter’s first birthday.
From feeling abandoned when her partner goes back to work, to finding the courage to seek help with her postpartum depression, and connecting with a community of other mothers – Year One is a story of vulnerability and resilience. But perhaps the most important part of Erin’s motherhood journey is watching her learn how to take care of herself as she learns how to take care of her little girl.
New York Times bestselling author Frank Schaeffer will also introduce his latest book, Fall in Love, Have Children, Stay Put, Save the Planet, Be Happy, a post-coronavirus evolution-based how-to for putting living ahead of work. Schaeffer offers a passionate social and lifestyle “blueprint” for changes needed to rebalance our work lives with thriving relationships. Schaeffer is the author of more than a dozen fiction and nonfiction books, including Crazy for God and Keeping Faith: A Father Son Story about Love and the United States Marine Corps, and host of the Podcast In Conversation… with Frank Schaeffer.
