“Let’s fast-forward to some conclusions you might expect to find as a recap near the end of a book. I’m putting this list here because I want to lay my cards on the table upfront regarding the social, political, spiritual, and lifestyle changes I hope this book will help bring about. And I’ll do my best to back up the reasons for this list’s demands in the rest of the book. In the changed and better America, I hope you’ll join me in fighting for the following:
There would be no barriers to our careers when we leave work, care for our children, and then return to work.
Care for preschool-age children would be top-notch, child-centered, free, and rooted in the hands-on experiences of nature, creative play, conversational skills, social skills, and making art and music—no matter the parent’s zip code or skin color or gender or sexual orientation.
Teen and other young parents (single or pair-bonded) would get total support to continue their educations and lives and suffer no downside for being parents while also completing school.
Access to contraception would be free and available to all.
Access to abortion services would be free and available to all.
Healthcare would be free and available to all.
We’d lead the world with the highest minimum wage, constantly adjusted for inflation; in other words, we’d have no more working poor parents struggling to just survive.
Our Social Security system would recognize support for parenting as the number-one national priority so parents who stayed home to care for small children would receive full benefits in retirement for those years, even if they had no job outside the home and so didn’t pay into the system with payroll deductions.”
