Newsflash: Fathers Enjoy Being Fathers
“Somewhat prophetically, the pre-Covid pandemic studies on fatherhood seemed to predict the results of a 2020 midpandemic study, which showed that 45 percent of American fathers were spending more time on childcare than they did before the pandemic—and liking it. What the pre-Covid-19 researchers into fatherhood would not have found surprising was how many fathers seemed to be enjoying the experience of actually being fathers and caregivers. Researchers Daniel L. Carlson (University of Utah), Richard Petts (Ball State University), and Joanna R. Pepin (University of Texas-Austin), surveyed 1,060 US parents in mixed-gender marriages in late April 2020. They wanted to see how divisions of housework and childcare changed after the beginning of the pandemic and stay-at-home orders were issued as schools, childcare centers, and non-essential businesses were shuttered. The study found that 43 percent of fathers reported pitching in more with care of older children, and 42 percent reported an overall increase in housework time.”
