“When the essential male nature as nurturing protector is squandered, men lash out. Maybe that erasure of males’ essential nature as nurturing beings is why when I listened to a podcast interview with Jordan Peterson, a Canadian philosopher who has been embraced by a lot of men’s rights groups, I reacted negatively. It was like an alcoholic being offered a drink again. It seemed he was a vehemently anti-feminist and as a Christian he echoed (as cleverly as he could but still unmistakably) the fundamentalist crap I was raised on. He was telling other men that when they want to put a woman in her place, this is what nature (and/or God) intended. In a deeper way, Jordan comes off as a toxically antinurturing-male. He seemed to be dog-whistling to a lot of disenfranchised boys or angry men who have a hard time keeping up the front of authority over others, with rhetoric about the so-called hero’s journey (a common narrative archetype, involving a hero who goes on an adventure, learns lessons, wins a victory with that newfound knowledge, and then returns home transformed).”
